The History of our Austin Office

Last week, an article posted in the Austin American-Statesman discussing the acquisition of two historical buildings in downtown Austin. One of these, the Littlefield Building, is home to Waggener Edstrom’s Austin office. Centrally located at 6th and Congress (and near some tasty eateries like Royal Blue Grocery and The Driskill’s 1886 Café), the Littlefield Building provides a great space for a creative newsroom like ours. Seeing the post in the Statesman inspired me to do some digging on the building’s history:

  • Designed by local architect C.H. Page, Jr. in 1910
  • Built under the direction of, and named after, George Washington Littlefield – a cattleman, banker and member of the University of Texas Board of Regents
  • Opening celebration took place June 6, 1912
  • Originally built to house the American National Bank and, at various points in time, was home to 6 stores, a barbershop and a billiards room
  • Famous tenant: Lyndon Baines Johnson
  • Recorded in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002
  • Current tenants include: 1080 Inc., Lynxs Group and Ocean Conservancy

The Waggener Edstrom Austin office feels fortunate to have secured such a fabulous, downtown location in the middle of Austin’s high tech hotbed. I love this quote from the Statesman article:

“The acquisition comes as downtown Austin’s tenant base is becoming increasingly diversified with an influx of tech firms. “These assets have become high-demand creative office buildings that play a key role in the history of Austin,” said Michael Provost, acquisitions director with DivcoWest. “They add a sense of place and history for a wide range of tenants, while at the same time providing very unique spaces in a downtown market populated largely by traditional office space.”

We welcome the new high tech companies moving into Littlefield. Look for a Happy Hour invite from us soon!
